Projects Night 2017

A project night is a student event where teams of 2-3 people spend their night time generating ideas and conducting mini-studies on a specific business case.
Prep. Day: 01.09.2017
Launch : 07.09.2017
Budget: 50,000 ₸

The theme of “Projects Night – 2017” was environmentally friendly modes of transport and pedestrian culture. On September the 8th, students created the solution for 5 cases. The theme of "green" movement is relevant in Almaty, where the problem of polluted air is acute, mostly due to the vehicle emissions.

The Alliance of Pedestrians and Cyclists, created by the Common Sense Foundation with the support of the UNDP “Sustainable Transport Almaty” Project was Narxoz’s partner in this project. The organization united the communities involved in cycling and walking initiatives, and now activists from Narxoz.

Students of Narxoz explained their own case studies that could change the city infrastructure.

Case №1 opened the topic of "popularizing pedestrian culture and environmentally friendly modes of transport among students and university workers". Participants presented the ideas on the development of optimal routes between the two buildings of Narxoz, motivated teachers to abandon buses and cars in favor of harmless, ecological and health-friendly bicycles and hiking.

The winner in this category was the team, whose idea was to introduce modern gadgets, such as bicycle generators. These innovative tools would provide additional energy for recharging electronic devices. As one of the project’s author noted, it potential cyclists double benefit such as trained muscles and charged devices.

Case №2 considered the creation of a bicycle workshop in university campus. Despite the fact that this problem was considered to be the most difficult one, the students approached the solution of the problem creatively. The winners selected a suitable place for a bicycle shop, offered their services in registering bicycle rentals and selling accessories of “Velomag” shop.

Case №3 was called "car free day on the territory of the university and 10th micro district" was won by the children with an interactive event. According to the authors, the rejection of transport should take place in the form of Bike-quest. After completing the quest, those who refuse cars will be invited to watch a film in the open air, bicycle shows and the art competition on the subject of environmentally friendly transport. For children, students have provided a special leisure activity program. The motto of this event was "We do not interfere with the movement, we ARE the movement!"

Case №4 referred to the creation of a bicycle school in collaboration with “Velo-Almaty”. The current organization invited students to develop a special training course for children and adults, so that they can learn how to cycle.

The team did not only win thought out classes for novice clients, but also went further. Their project took into account training opportunities for advanced cyclists with mountain biking and freestyle courses on difficult tracks. Students conducted a study to determine the target audience, calculated the timing of the implementation and involvement of staff, as well as a system of incentives for these courses.

Case №5 or "bicycle as transport" proposed by the program “Biketowork”, which has become popular abroad. The program aims to provide affordable cycling to work, school or university. In the opinion of the winners, well-known personalities in Kazakhstan, such as artists, video bloggers, and presenters, should attract the audience for such events. With the help of “Onay” transport card, you can rent bicycles depending on the accumulated distance while using the card. In conclusion, students also offered solutions to the problem of parking for this green transport.

“Projects Night” was the second event that was held in Narxoz together with the Alliance of cyclists and pedestrians. In early August, international summer school course was held at the university where participants solved transport problems of large cities in Kazakhstan during the week, and one of the cases was dealing with the issue of student movement between the first and second university buildings.
